Bihar has a glorious past; it was the centre of political and spiritual power of India. Patliputra was the capital of Maurya Empire and later Gupta Empire. Bihar was the land that Gautam Buddha obtained enlightenment from when he started sending the messages of his new faith—Buddhism. Mahavir, the 24th Tirthankara of Jain religion, was from Vaishali.

Today Bihar is visited by Buddhists and Jains from all over the world who visit its pilgrimages connected with the lives of these great religious leaders. Later, Patna became an important centre of Sikhism also as the last guru, Guru Govind Singh, was born in Patna City. In modern times Patna developed as an important trade centre.

After independence till late 1950s the administration of Bihar was cited as excellent. But the downfall of the State began during mid-1960s and 1970s. Now Bihar Renaissance Foundation has been set up for the purpose of identifying developmental gaps in various sectors and suggesting measures to fill them. We will submit our survey and research-based reports to stakeholders and request them to implement our recommendations.
